If you’re interested in interviews with authors, promotions of new books, or any other literary event, Powell’s Books is the place to go—not literally, since they’re located in Portland, Oregon, but lucky for us, the Powell’s website has a fantastic calendar of events for readers’ perusal.
The variety of events means there’s something for everyone. Some of them require a ticket or book purchase, but most are free. At the moment, events are held on Zoom, so you can attend from anywhere! If you can’t make it to one that catches your eye, no worries—the Powell’s YouTube channel saves all of their past events as well.
You may not be familiar with any of the authors on the calendar, but that just means you might discover a new favorite! There are more options than you might think—from the financial and political analysis of modern America through Casey Michel’s new American Kleptocracy, to Sandor Ellix Katz’s discussion of fermented food as a cultural and culinary topic (and that’s just looking at the next couple of weeks.) Take a look, and you might find something you never knew you were interested in!
Powell’s supports all of the authors in their events by offering links to purchase the author’s new book. This direct support is one of the reasons independent bookstores are so important. They offer support to authors through events like these, and purchasing from independent bookstores supports small communities (and is better than buying from Amazon, as we all know.) Along with thousands of others, Powell’s is helping to create community and keep independent bookstores alive. So check out their event calendar, and if you do find yourself in Portland, make sure to stop by in person!
