Did you know A Common Place is Longwood’s second literary journal? The first, The Gyre, had multiple publications that included student fiction, poetry, art, essays and non-fiction. The Gyre published their second issue in 1967, the editorial note acknowledged obstacles Longwood and America endured that year, including the woe of Vietnam. Multiple submissions included reference to the war. Student Martha Via submitted “The War drags on”, an essay which expounds on the uncertainty and implications of a nation at war. The issue and its submissions tackled a wide range of subjects from wartime chaos to relationships. The issue was dedicated to the class of 1967. It included fourteen written submissions and ten pieces of artwork from various students.
The Gyre gave students on campus an opportunity to use their voice. The untitled poem by Janet Sturgill was among the great poetry that students submitted. Students wrote on issues and ideas of America, Longwood, and self. A Common Place also strives to create a space where student voices are highlighted and valued. Publication in an undergraduate literary journal is a plus on resumes, portfolios and can often be the beginning of a literary career. Do you have written work to be submitted?
